Opening a Gateway: SR 20 & Mill Road Roundabout

Have you ever been perplexed, stuck, or frustrated by the close proximity of the SR20/Mill Road and the Discovery Road/Mill Road intersections? And how about the skewed angle of the Discovery Road/Jacob Miller Road intersection? Discovery Road and SR20 are the two main ways to access Port Townsend and they converge at this location. This is why a Gateway is a fitting description for this particular location as nearly everyone entering or leaving Port Townsend experiences this intersection. The existing configuration is also quite challenging for non-motorized transportation which is important with the Larry Scott/Olympic Discovery Trail adjoining.
In 2021, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) initiated a process for evaluation of replacing the signal with a mini-roundabout. Since that time, City and County Staff have been working with WSDOT to consider a more comprehensive solution to this complex and busy intersection. With over 17,000 cars per day, a full scale roundabout is desired over a compact roundabout. The benefits for all modes of travel include safer pedestrian and bicycle access and safer vehicle and freight access. The focus of this project is mobility for all. The adjoining areas are very important to Jefferson County and the City of Port Townsend, which is a compelling reason for the City and County to work together for the long term betterment of our transportation system. State Route 19 and State Route 20 lead not only to Port Townsend, but also beyond to Whidbey Island. The reverse is true as well marking the regional significance on this important connection to the Olympic Peninsula.
The following web page shares the efforts of County and City staff in the request for funding to support an approximate $10 million investment. Please stay tuned and join us in opening this gateway to reflect the values of our community. This project not only addresses a needed transportation investment, but also opens the door to setting the stage for how we are welcoming community.
