Engineering and Construction

Engineering Graphic

The Engineering Department provides a full range of civil engineering services for infrastructure improvements, utilities (water, sewer, stormwater, and wastewater), and review of public/private development projects.

Those services also include transportation, City planning, grant administration, GIS mapping database, and ROW management.

Engineering Design Standards
The Engineering Design Standards (EDS) provide project proponents such as developers, landowners, and design professionals information to assist in the development of design plans and permit applications. Specifically, when engineering plans are required for project approval, the EDS will serve as a primary basis for review. Additional resources used by City staff as a basis for review include the Port Townsend Municipal Code, State and Federal laws and codes,  industry standards such as those published by the American Water Works Association and the Department of Transportation, and other resources necessary to provide comprehensive and thorough design plans and permit applications. Quality plans are necessary for construction and inspection of new public infrastructure that is the backbone for our City services. The Engineering Design Standards may be updated from time to time.  Project proponents need to check this website at the beginning of every project to ensure that the latest version of the EDS is used for their projects.

Capital Projects
Capital Projects are projects that are on City property and funded by the City. Although the City reviews permits and development plans for private construction and projects, those projects are not on public property or funded by the City. Our Capital Projects Directory shows all of the current City projects.

Past Projects
The City usually has about 3-10 Capital projects each year, these projects range from sidewalk installation to Regional stormwater facility. Check out some of the past projects the City has completed.

Bid Opportunities
The City posts public works contracting and professional service opportunities available for contractors, business partners and the public. Here you will find current Request for Qualifications/Proposals and advertised Bid opportunities.

Transportation
The City of Port Townsend is building streets that provide people more choice – to walk, bike, ride the bus, and drive. The City oversees transportation systems and infrastructure by implementing plans to develop an efficient, accessible, and convenient transportation network in the City.
