Discovery Road Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Improvements Project

Project Overview
The Discovery Road Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Improvements Project will install separated bicycle lanes, signing, pavement markings, thru-intersection bicycle lane markings, and pedestrian and bicyclists mixing zone crossing improvements. The project work will include improvements extending from McClellan Street to approximately 100 feet east of Sheridan Street on Discovery Road/19th Street.
Why has the City made this project a priority?
This project was designated as a priority by the Port Townsend City Council in recognition of the need for safety improvements immediately adjacent to and in front of Salish Coast Elementary School. This project will complement work already completed along Discovery Road between Rainier Street and McClellan Street. This project will install safety features that are the result of input which was gathered during the public engagement period for the Discovery Road Bikeway, Roadway, and Sidewalk Project. This public engagement included the formation of a stakeholder group which met five times to discuss the concept design and how to tie that project in with the rest of the Discovery Road corridor. One tie-in area that was of prime importance to the stakeholder group was the area in front of Salish Coast Elementary School, and east to Sheridan Street. It was acknowledged by the group that the stretch of Discovery Road between McClellan Street and Sheridan Street needed bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements.
