PRESS RELEASE - Healthier Together Survey

PORT TOWNSEND, Washington – The City of Port Townsend hosted the first Public Open House to gather community feedback on the Port Townsend Health and Wellness Center, or the rebuild of the Mountain View pool, on Tuesday, March 14, at Fort Worden Commons. Eighty people were in attendance. In addition, the City hosted a virtual open house on Thursday, March 16 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

The City is launching a brief survey to gather public feedback on the rebuild of the pool if it should include other amenities, and where it should be sited. This survey will stay open for two weeks, closing on March 31, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. It can be found at this link.

This planning effort began in September 2021 following many previous efforts to replace the Mountain View pool. An aquatics facility in a community can provide both preventative care and health and fitness for all ages. Providing the opportunity for every child to learn to swim is a health and safety issue for a community surrounded by water. Providing water fitness, a warm water therapy pool, and access to lap swimming helps people age gracefully and live a healthy lifestyle. The current Mountain View pool, circa 1963, is beyond its useful life and is being operated and maintained by the City and the Olympic Peninsula YMCA. The City continues to invest in the pool to extend its useful life, but this will not continue to be sufficient for optimal, up-to-date needs, and the growth of the community in East Jefferson County. The steering committee includes representatives from Jefferson County, Port Townsend School District, Port of Port Townsend, Jefferson Healthcare, Jefferson Aquatic Coalition and Olympic Peninsula YMCA.
