Washington and Walker Sidewalk Project

Improving Accessibility Between Downtown & Uptown
Project Overview
This project will connect safe pedestrian access to Sims Way, the Jefferson County Courthouse, the adjacent park with sport courts, and connectivity to the Uptown post office and business district beyond. This section was selected to close a critical gap in the sidewalk network.
The project is slated for construction in late summer or early fall 2025, with a to-be-determined date. The project is paid for by an approximately $200,000 Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) Sidewalk Program Grant and the city is designing and managing this project in-house to reduce projects costs.
During project planning and implementation the City will continue to work with the local Disability Awareness Starts Here (DASH) organization to identify and prioritize construction of sidewalks in key locations to maximize public benefit and reduce program costs.
Project Update: June 20, 2025
- In the next few weeks, passersby may see the City's cultural resource consultant digging a few exploratory holes looking for historical significance prior to project construction, which is standard practice for a public works project of this scale.
Open House held Tuesday, June 17, 5:30 - 7pm
City Staff and other City representatives met at 5:30pm at the Courthouse Park, 1820 Jefferson St, Port Townsend, WA 98368. The purpose of this Open House was to discuss the Washington and Walker St Project. Attendees were primarily residents from the immediate neighborhood and generally supported the project. The City will continue to coordinate with neighbors with direct frontage impacts through design and construction.
