19th Street Active Transportation Safety Improvements

Improving access and safety on 19th street

Project Overview

This project addresses a non-motorized transportation route gap by constructing approximately 1,300 feet of sidewalk on the southern side of 19th Street between Landes Street and San Juan Avenue. Project components to be considered during design include sidewalk, curb extensions, rectangular rapid flash beacons (RRFBs), buffered bike lanes, raised crosswalks, median islands, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant curb ramps. The City has been selected to receive $763,000 in state funding from the Multimodal Transportation Account–State Appropriation (see attached award letter and project summary below). The City Transportation Benefit District is funding $75,000 of the total project budget of $838,000.

Project Area

Why is the City prioritizing this project right now?

19th Street is a main corridor fo pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists.  The corridor connects the Mountain View Campus, Golf Course, Salish Coast School as well as crosses the valley separating Castle Hill from Uptown.  The existing roadway configuration is a large open street which induces high vehicle speeds.  About half of the corridor has sidewalks.  This project will enhance pedestrian safety by installing sidewalks between Landes and the existing sidewalk near San Juan.  It will also include traffic calming and enhanced crossings.  This project is funded through the State Highway Safety Improvement Program and reflects improvements needed in the City's Local Road Safety Plan.

This project will:

lnstall sidewalk:

  • South side of 19th St from Landes St to existing sidewalk west of San Juan Avenue

Install buffered bike lanes:

  • 19th St from Landes St to San Juan Avenue

lnstall curb extensions, raised crosswalks, rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFB), and traffic calming median island:

  • 19th St and Landes St

Install rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFB) and traffic calming median island:

  • 9th St and San Juan Ave

Note: Project above includes associated ADA and utility work as needed
