PRESS RELEASE - City of Port Townsend Community Services Director Lands State Librarian Role

Melody Sky Weaver to transition to new role as Washington State Librarian after over 11 years of service to the Port Townsend community

August 10, 2026 - PORT TOWNSEND – Melody Sky Weaver, the City of Port Townsend’s Community Services Director, has announced her resignation after more than 11 years of service to the City and community. She has been appointed by Secretary of State Steve Hobbs to serve as the 31st Washington State Librarian for the Office of the Secretary of State.

Sky Weaver was the City’s first Community Services Director, overseeing a new integrateddepartment that brought Library, Parks and Facilities, and Arts and Culture under one banner. Prior to being appointed to that role in January 2025, she had been the City’s Library Director for 10 years.

Outgoing City Manager John Mauro says: “Melody has truly put our public library on the map, and helped make it a shining example of how a small, nimble, and creative library team can have a major positive community impact. Her success and approach there made the fusion of a new department possible, and I’ll be forever grateful for her courage and leadership in launching that new integrated department. It’s been a game-changer for the City and for our community – and will be long after her tenure with the City concludes.”

Melody Sky Weaver started as Library Director for the City of Port Townsend in 2015. Prior to that, she was Branch Manager for the Kitsap Regional Library for nearly four years, Librarian for the Boise Public Library for over three years, and began her career as a Children’s Librarian at the Garden City Public Library for two years. Sky Weaver also has a background in fine art and is passionate about access and equity to public institutions such as public libraries and parks, and works to foster environments that support lifelong learning and bring people together.

“As much as I’m delighted and honored to accept this exciting new role to build relationships across the state and nation to champion libraries, it’s also bittersweet for me to leave the team, organization, and community, I’ve served and loved for over a decade. Together my team and I improved equitable access to the library and parks and worked to enhance Port Townsend’s quality of life by promoting the lifelong joys of reading, enjoying parks and opens spaces,maintaining facilities, being creative and appreciating art all while building connections and friendships. I will always treasure and feel heartfelt gratitude for my time in this vibrant Victorian Seaport and Arts community and look forward to visiting and supporting the Carnegie library as your new Washington State Librarian.” 

Sky Weaver last day in the office will be August 28 and she begins as Washington State Librarian 
on October 1. City Manager John Mauro and his director team will explore short- and longterm approaches for continuing the important work of the Community Services Department.
