Have You Ever Thought About Running For City Council?

Do you love Port Townsend? Do you care about our collective future? Do you think you would bring a useful perspective and skillset to our local government? Have you ever found yourself wondering “why don’t they just fix the potholes?” or “why don’t we have more rules about where raccoons can live?” If so, I encourage you to run for a seat on the Port Townsend City Council!

Serving on City Council over the last decade has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. As a council member and as mayor, I have—variously—participated in, guided, and objected to hundreds or even thousands of decisions that have directly affected the lives of residents. From public safety, to infrastructure, to zoning, to parks, and beyond, no other level of government is anywhere near so intimately intertwined in our daily existence. And in a community like ours, it is essential that our council reflect the diverse voices and perspectives of those who live here. By stepping forward to run for city council, you can represent the concerns and aspirations of your neighbors, ensuring that everyone has a stake in the decisions that shape our lives.

If this sounds good to you, then your chance to run for City Council is  this week! We have three council seats that will be elected this coming November, including at least one (City Council Position #1) for which no incumbent is running. Filing week this year will run from Monday, May 5 through Friday, May 9, so you don’t have much more time to think about it! We certainly need good people to be willing to step up and lend their knowledge, skills, and community spirit to help guide Port Townsend’s future.
