Crowning the Haines Place Park and Ride, the Heron Weather vane is a stunning work of public art by renowned metal artist Russell Jaqua. Commissioned in 1995 during the transit center's development, the piece replaced an earlier concept of a whale and was designed to capture the grace and movement of the iconic blue heron. Jaqua, an internationally acclaimed artist and long-time Centrum artist-in-residence, brought his signature craftsmanship to the project, blending artistic elegance with the natural beauty of metalwork.

This project was overseen by Yvonne Pepin-Wakefield, a skilled artist and art coordinator who played a pivotal role in shaping public art in Port Townsend. Her efforts included working closely with Jaqua to ensure the weathervane became a crowning symbol of artistic excellence for the community. Installed as the final touch to the park and ride's construction, the Heron Weather vane stands as a testament to collaboration and creativity, enhancing one of Port Townsend's key transportation hubs.
